A year from his death, Barga pays tribute to one of the greatest Scottish artists Sir John Bellany. A tribute not only for his artistic importance, but also for his love and passion for Barga and the Serchio Valley. A promise made to him while still alive and finally fulfilled with this intense two-month exhibition in four important locations in the town where you can follow his “Voyage to Barga” from the dark moments of his early life tormented by desperation and disillusionment to the new light found when he discovered the Serchio Valley and set up a second home in Fosciandora with his loving wife Hellen. A home where he started to live again just like the famous Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli a century ago when he discovered his “Garden of Eden”.
Artistic similarities that bind the two “Maestros” in this “Voyage to Barga”. A voyage towards a paradise of serenity, inspirations of colour and poetic verses dedicated to the humble traditions of the people and their land, to the natural beauty and surroundings.
You can admire different moments of his work in the following locations:
Museo delle Rocche e Fortificazioni in Via di Borgo – the heart of John Bellany’s life in Barga
La Galleria in Piazza San Rocco – a selection of his major works
Fondazione Ricci in Via Roma – a range of works from his early student days up until the last year of his life.
Villa di Riposo (Old People’s Home) G. Pascoli in Via Roma – a permanent exhibition of Bellany’s works that he donated to the structure due to his love for old people.
